Synopsis
We recommend the following prescription: Strange Medicine – weird and wonderful stories for all that ails you. Strange Medicine is a fantastic collection of extraordinary tales of transformation by UK weird-fiction author Mike Russell. If you love the strange, surreal and unusual or if you are just looking for something different, Strange Medicine is for you.
My thoughts
This isn’t the first time that Mike Russell has taken me on a weird and wonderful journey. I reviewed another of his books Strange Secrets (Read it here) back in September. You might think that would have prepared me for what was to come, that I would be used to the way in which Mike’s mind works and therefore be less taken aback by the tales on offer. Unfortunately, you would be wrong.
The stories here are once again weird and wonderful. While incredibly entertaining I was once again left scratching my head wondering what the author must have been taking when they wrote the stories. On rereading they (sometimes) became a little clearer.
The stories are mostly short and sweet, (one clocks in at 5 pages) and the overall collection is less than 150 pages – so you could probably read it in one sitting if you wanted to, but I was not able. After a good amount of the stories I needed to put the book down and have a good think. I’m still not sure I understood what was happening in Flock ;-).
Mike is clearly a fantastic writer and has a way with words that is hard to match. With vivid imagery that truly pulls you into the story, they certainly are pure entertainment. As with everything they may not be for everyone and may be a bit too “out there” for some people. However, if you are up for a bit of fun, and like zany and sometimes macabre stories I can once again highly recommend these stories from Mike Russell. Get on it!
